Ancient Chinese literature records about 13,000 medicinals and more than 100,000 medicinal recipes. Ingredients are typically plants and plant extracts, but also include animal parts and minerals. TCM supplements use ancient theory that includes the Four Natures (hot, warm, cool and cold), Five Flavors (acrid, sweet, bitter, sour and salty), Meridians, and specific function. Meridians are pathways of energy running throughout the body that unifies all parts of the body, even connecting the interior of the body with the exterior. There are twelve regular meridians, one for each organ, and eight extra meridians that have relationships with multiple organs and biological functions. The specific function is a lot like western medicine, in that each supplement will have a use in healing. Acupuncture uses fine needles placed at meridians to restore the balance and the supplements address the symptomology and base organ for a total release of blocked energy and relief of symptoms. The supplement works in conjunction for the same aim.

Keep in mind that TCM supplements are chemicals that alter body functions, such as lowering blood pressure or blood sugar. These chemicals may produce beneficial or harmful effects, and you should discuss supplementation with your doctor and your acupuncturist prior to starting any supplemental regimen to be sure there will be no negative interactions with current western drugs you may be taking.

Acupuncture, Injection Therapy and Laser Therapy for Post-Stroke Recovery

I am a 73 year old female who has suffered from osteoarthritis for many years. I have taken several over-the-counter pain medications to relieve the pain, as well as prescription drugs. Through the years the pain continued to increase to the point I was taking an excessive dosage of pain medication. On March 23, 2011 I suffered a stroke and was in intensive care for 5 days and was unable to walk. Upon release from the hospital, I began physical therapy for a period of 8 weeks.

Prescribed pain medicine would not alleviate the pain I experienced, sometimes 24 hours a day. My doctors had determined I could not take medication that contained aspirin or Ibuprofen and the pain at times would become excruciating. According to a National Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) survey, an estimated 10% of Americans have tried acupuncture. Of those who haven’t tried it, 60% would consider trying it, if needed.

However, a 2004 U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services report showed that looking at a much larger group of Americans and found that only 4% had ever tried acupuncture. Still, the same data shows that acupuncture is slightly more popular than homeopathy, four times more popular than naturopathy, and ten times more popular than ayurveda. So it would seem that even with the interest in it is coming from someone other than mainstream western doctors.

That said, a decade old survey showed that US doctors were more apt to refer their patients to acupuncture clinics than a chiropractor for back and neck issues. The survey showed that literature published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, US medical doctors are most likely to refer patients for acupuncture (43%) than for chiropractic (40%) or massage (21%).

The statistics are probably even higher now that the National Institutes of Health have given a green light to acupuncture. Again, it makes sense given that acupuncture studies have shown the efficacy of the therapy, while chiropractic has not. The strange part of it is that five times as many people have used chiropractic than acupuncture, most likely because doctors of chiropractic have been very good at marketing their services to the public and don’t need to rely on doctor referrals.

There is hope, however because a 2004 USDH report showed that of the people who used an alternative medicine system like acupuncture, ayurveda, homeopathy, or naturopathy, more of them had tried acupuncture than the other systems because their conventional medical professional suggested it.
