What is Acupuncture and How Does it Work?

by Mario Dube on May 8, 2012

We are often asked, what is acupuncture and how does it work? Acupuncture has a long history and is a way of treating the body that requires a different way of understanding. Meanings and practices take a different mindset, and since they are also based on a different language and culture, can get lost in translation. So let’s see if we can make sense of some of them.

What is Acupuncture and How Does it Work? One basic of acupuncture is meridians. Meridians are pathways of energy running throughout the body that unifies all parts of the body, even connecting the interior of the body with the exterior. There are twelve regular meridians, one for each organ, and eight extra meridians that have relationships with multiple organs and biological functions. If there is an obstruction or disharmony in one area of the meridian or in its pertaining organ the consequence of that disharmony can be felt anywhere along the pathway of that meridian. There are 365 acupuncture points that lie on the main meridians.

During treatment, points are selected in combination and acupuncture needles are inserted into them to reestablish balance within the body. Acupuncture needles are hair thin, sterile, and used only once. What one patient experiences may be different from another. Some feel a dull ache behind the head of the needle, others feel tingling, warmth, movement, or no real sensation at all, and sensations can differ depending on the acupuncture point. The number of needles used varies as does the length of time the needles are left in the body. Most patients feel a deep sense of relaxation during and after the session, followed by increased energy, better sleep, and a general sense of wellbeing that can last for days after treatment. Regular acupuncture treatment can help maintain balance and harmony so illness doesn’t occur.

Real Patient Acupuncture Clinic Reviews

Dr. Mario Dube is a very personable Doctor who asks a lot of questions to understand all aspects of the patients problem(s). He also checks up each week for a detailed progress report. If the patient does not openly voice the information each week he will ask all the questions one by one until he gets the full picture of what has taken place since your last visit. Dr. Dube truly is the type of Doctor we all wish we had because he genuinely cares for his patients and gives them his undivided attention and his very best at each appointment. He is also not narrow minded by his profession and believes that in some cases acupuncture may be best while in other cases chiropractic or western medicines may be a better solution for some patients. What I really like though is that he is very analytical by nature which means that he studies his information and his art of medicine very carefully just as he does his individual patients. This ultimately equates to Quality Care. Thanks Dr. Dube for taking great pride in your work.
